The Year 7 experience is one of the most important phases in a teenager’s life. Students step into a much larger world, where they must test and apply their knowledge and experiences, while opening their eyes and minds to new experiences. Everything becomes new – from how a typical day runs, to the social and academic experiences that emerge, reflecting the demands of a world they continue to grow into.
From adapting to new Homeroom group, undertaking new subjects and opportunities, our Year 7s adapt to the greater academic standards of our College. They get to take risks in new fields such as STEM, Science and Performing Arts, and understand that taking accountability for their own learning is key to success.
We give them opportunities and support to embrace co-curricular activities – whether it’s participating in academic competitions, theatre or musical productions, Sport, Chess, Debating or Public Speaking – and everything in between. They get to demonstrate leadership, confidence, develop deep social connection among their peers, and showcase their growing skills in creativity, cultural and problem-solving.
In Years 7 and 8, students study core subjects that help them explore their interests.
These subjects are designed to bridge the transition from primary to secondary school and broadening their understanding.

Transitioning to Secondary Education – Michael, Year 7
“My transition to Year 7 from Primary School to St Bede’s College has been an amazing journey. Throughout the year, I’ve enjoyed the kind and caring community, and work environment. Everyone has been extremely supportive and welcoming, especially my amazing Homeroom Teacher and Year Level Coordinator. It’s a privilege to be a member of the St Bede’s community.
On our first day, we were taken to our allocated homeroom, and sat down with our fellow classmates. Based on my initial meeting with them, I was confident I would be creating lifelong friendships. Our homeroom teacher talked to us about what we should expect throughout the year.
I must admit, I was a little nervous to begin, but the friendliness of the teachers and students made it so much easier to settle into Secondary school. Throughout our first day, we met each subject teacher, which was one of the biggest changes – because in Primary school we only had one or two teachers for the whole year. Despite the adjustment, their infectious and kind personalities made me feel comfortable with the changes.
Another fun part was the renowned Indoor Soccer Tournament. The tournament brought the all the classes together and created tighter camaraderie between the homerooms.
My transition to Year 7 has been phenomenal. A massive thanks goes to the amazing staff, friendly students and the pristine facilities we have access to.”
The Impact Of Our Community – Lucas, Year 7
“My transition to Year 7 has been such an adventure. All through the year, I have had the chance to embrace some incredible opportunities including sports and academic extracurricular activities. I have been surrounded by caring staff and teachers and a fantastic environment. The staff and teachers have been super kind and helpful during my transition.
I was a bit hesitant when I first got to St Bede’s, as I didn’t know anyone. It was also a massive change from what I was used to – as I didn’t go to primary school due to being home-schooled. Even though I had these worries, the wholeheartedness and kindness from the teachers made it easy to settle in and find my people.
One of the highlights was the Athletics Carnival at the Mentone Campus. It was a great chance to see the campus and meet Year 7 students from Mentone. We participated in events such as running, high jump, long jump and many more, with House points being added into our yearly competition.
My transition to Year 7 was seamless. The fantastic environment has nourished my passions all throughout the year and the teachers have been amazing. It is such a privilege to be part of this College Community.”
The Enjoyment of ACC Sport – Thomas, Year 8
Throughout the year, many Year 8s were involved in ACC Sport. In Term 2, 8A footy team had to win the last game of the year against reigning premiers, Parade College. The game came to the very end, but we ended up losing by 6 points and missing out on it.
Overall ACC was fantastic, with all the teams making a great effort and some teams making the grand final putting up a good fight throughout the season. We will all be looking forward to ACC Sport in Year 9.
Year 8 was a leap of change from Year 7, but we will definitely look back on it as a fun and new journey. We were open to many new experiences in Year 8, some more challenging and others more fun.
